Death, The Great Equalizer

April 16, 2018 By Wendy Leave a Comment

Ijust returned from London, England. We stayed in London for a week. I have so many impressions of the place, that I’ll probably talk about here. One of my first impressions came from our visit to the Westminster Abbey. That place was amazing. But one of my first impressions of it, is that death is the great equalizer.

In the Abbey, kings and queens and famous people are laid to rest. Their tombs are throughout the Abbey, with elaborate and ornate tombs for the more powerful people in this life. For instance, you have Queen Elizabeth buried there. She is the one queen most people have heard of. I certainly can’t name a lot of kings and queens of England, but I have heard of Queen Elizabeth. I’m not sure how many movies have been made about this red headed powerful queen who reigned during the time Shakespeare was writing his plays. She has gone down in history as one of the greatest. Yet with all of her power, success, royal blood, death caught her, just like it catches everybody. What did Benjamin Franklin say? Something about we can’t escape death and taxes. She is now where she will be for eternity and nobody can change that. Her bones rest in an ornate tomb, elevated high and put in a position of honor, there at the Abbey. It is ornate, with a craved and painted figure of her, laying down on top of the tomb. It is surrounded by artful metal lattice work, with a sign that reads who this is. But all that is there, are her bones, if even that. They may be dust now. With all of her power, she could never stop death from coming. And despite all her power, her royal blood, none of that would determine her fate, after her death. There is only one thing, did she accept Jesus Christ? Only she and God know this.

When death catches up with us, we are headed in two different directions. Yes, there is life after death, and where you spend it depends on what you did with Jesus Christ. Jesus died an awful death. He was beaten so badly, he was unrecognizable. He was crucified, probably the most painful way to die. He was buried, and given a tomb to be buried in. It was donated by a rich man. Guards were placed in front of the tomb, not because he had power on this earth, but because the Romans thought His disciples were going to come and steal the body. Three days later, He rose from the dead. And now that tomb is empty. There are no bones that have turned to dust. It is completely empty.

In this life, we may have power, or we may not. We may be rich, or we may not. Death comes to all. It is the great equalizer. No one can stop it. No power or riches can tell death to go away and leave us alone. None of us escape this planet without dying. And when we die, we automatically go to heaven or hell. There are no exceptions. At that point, no deals can be made. (Not that any deals could ever be made). There are no appeals to God as to where you go. Your fate is sealed. Queen Elizabeth had to make the same decision all of us have to make. Her wealth and royalty didn’t put her into heaven automatically. None of that ever mattered. It was what she did with Jesus Christ. God Himself, who was born a lowly birth and died, a lowly death.

Being nice doesn’t save you. Being a royal doesn’t save you. Rich people can’t buy their way into heaven. All mankind, every single person, whether rich or poor, powerful or a nobody, we all must decide what to do with Jesus Christ. Jesus is the only criteria. And death is the great equalizer. That was one of the thoughts that kept running through my mind at the Westminster Abbey.

Those Hypocrites!

February 27, 2017 By Wendy Leave a Comment

I apologize for not posting last week. I was out of town and thought I would get home by Sunday, but that was obviously not the case. So I, forgot everything last week. I guess you just can’t take me anywhere, without me forgetting my head.

Well I finally have an answer to a question that’s been bugging me for a long time. I heard the answer in church today. The question is, “Why should I become a Christian when I see Christians as nothing but a bunch of hypocrites.” I never knew what to say to that when I heard people ask that question. I had to agree with them. I know a number of Christians who are hypocrites. I would cringe when someone did say that, because it was so true. I would cringe and then stand there with my teeth in my mouth, realizing I had no answer. Nada. Zilch. The church is full of hypocrites. I would be lying if I said there weren’t.

But today the pastor gave me the answer for that question. Now I didn’t come up with the answer myself. This came from my pastor. Should I tell you who my pastor is? He’s very famous. Well, okay, you dragged it out of me. My pastor is Greg Laurie. How’s that for name dropping? I digress. So what is the answer to that question. It’s gotta be good. That’s a tough question. That’s one of those “gotcha” questions those heathens throw at you, when they don’t want to accept the gospel. It is a “gotcha” question. What can you say to that? No, Christians aren’t hypocrites. Then you’re lying. Well, yeah, you should just accept Jesus Christ as your Savior and ignore the hypocrites. But those heathens are crafty people. Once, they know they’ve got you, they can see the panic in your eyes, they keep hammering at it. Like a mosquito in your ear, they just won’t let up. Hypocrites. They’re all hypocrites! Well…yes…but… And that’s as far as I got.

So do you want to know the answer to this most difficult “gotcha” question? It was like a revelation when I heard pastor Greg say it today. (See, I’m giving him all the credit here, so no one can accuse me of plagiarism. Don’t want to be one of those hypocritical Christians now!). The answer is this: You aren’t putting your faith and trust into people (who can be hypocritical). You are putting your faith and trust in perfection which is Jesus Christ. Eureka! I struck gold! That’s brilliant! We’re not supposed to put our faith in people, ever. We are putting our faith into a non-hypocritical God. Isn’t that brilliant? Well, some of you probably already knew that.

And that is the distinction. We aren’t supposed to trust in man. Man will always let you down. We are all sinners in need of a Savior. We must put our faith and trust in the perfect Man, Jesus Christ. He is never hypocritical. He will never let you down. He is the same today, yesterday and forever. He can be counted on. He doesn’t lie. He was sinless when He went to the cross. He was sinless, as he died an agonizing death. He was still sinless when He rose from the dead. Now that Is Someone you can trust and believe in. Yes, there are hypocritical Christians. But they are not who God is asking for you to trust. He’s asking you to trust God, Jesus Christ, the sinless One, who gave His life that we might have eternal life.

So, I hope I answered a question for some of you. This really has bothered me for awhile. Hopefully, it helped some of you too. We’re not asking people to trust hypocritical people. We’re asking people to trust in a perfect, sinless God. There! Put that in the bank! I was going to say “put that in your pipe and smoke it,” but that just doesn’t seem to fit on a Christian blog.

While We Were Yet Sinners

March 21, 2016 By Wendy Leave a Comment

lone tree

While we were yet sinners.

Jesus went with the Roman soldiers when Judas had betrayed Him.

While we were yet sinners.

They tried Jesus Christ and accused Him falsely.

While we were yet sinners.

They whipped Jesus. The leather whips ripped open His back.

While we were yet sinners.

They placed a robe over his shredded back.

While we were yet sinners.

They placed the huge wooden cross upon His back.

While we were yet sinners.

He dropped the cross. He couldn’t carry it.

While we were yet sinners.

A man in the crowd was ordered to pick up His cross.

While we were yet sinners.

They nailed His feet and hands to the cross.

While we were yet sinners.

He cried out in agony.

While we were yet sinners.

He died on the cross.

While we were yet sinners.

They pierced His side.

While we were yet sinners.

Three days later, He rose from the dead.

While we were yet sinners.

“But God demonstrates His own love for us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” Romans 5:8

I Can’t Lie Very Well

March 14, 2016 By Wendy Leave a Comment

Iam the worst liar. I have many flaws, but lying is just not one of them. I just don’t do it well. I remember when I was younger. We lived across the street from my grandpa’s house. He owned and ran the school buses for the schools. He paid my sister and I money to clean the buses. Now you have to understand what that means. Imagine a school bus, where kids have come and gone for weeks, in the dead of winter. Picture this: black banana peels frozen to the floor of the bus, apple cores frozen to the floor of the bus, half eaten sandwiches frozen to the floor of the bus. Everything is frozen to the floor of the bus. We had to use the broom handle more than the actual broom. You had to take the broom handle and wack at the frozen food stuck to the floor. I guess I should be somewhat grateful, the food wasn’t warm and mushy. It was all frozen solid. But it wasn’t just a matter of sweeping everything and then your done. Nope. We had to chip the frozen stuff off the floor. That takes more time. And even if it wasn’t mushy, it was still gross. Not my most fun way to spend an afternoon. I did get paid, but I’m not sure it was worth it.

So one Saturday afternoon I was hanging out in our living room when I see my dad drive up in one of the school buses and park it in front of the house. Uh-oh. I knew what that meant-we have to clean that sucker. Eew. I really didn’t want to face all the grossness. So my sister and I ran to our bedroom and ducked behind a bed. We turned out the lights so it looked like no one was there. We were clever that way. A few minutes later, our bedroom door flings open and my dad is standing there calling for us. We slowly raise our heads up from behind the bed. My dad asks, “What are you doing in here?” Now this is when most people would lie. This is when most people would tell a little white lie like, “Oh, we’re just playing hide and seek.” But no. I don’t operate like that. My conscience swelled in my brain and I blurted out, “We’re hiding in here so we don’t have to clean the buses!” My sister turns and looks at me with this look like I am a complete moron. My dad is furious. He storms out of the house. I feel really bad. Not about telling the truth, but about my dad getting angry. My sister questions me as to why I just verbally vomited all over the place. She said I didn’t have to say anything at all. But no, that’s not me. My punishment for being so verbally honest was spending the afternoon chipping frozen banana peels and apple cores off the floor of the bus. I couldn’t escape it.

The Bible never shies away from the truth. It paints a very graphic picture of flawed man. It’s a picture with warts and all. If the Bible didn’t show us so graphically flawed, we would never see our need for salvation. Jesus Christ died for the lost. He didn’t die for the perfect. The perfect don’t need salvation. He died for the wretched men and women who see their warts and all and long to be cleansed. Isn’t that beautiful?

Living truthfully, for the Christian, is a really good thing. We shouldn’t pretend about things. God wants us transparent. He CAN see through us. He DOES know your every thought. He KNOWS everything about us. There is no hiding with God. Even if you don’t say the truth in your prayers, you haven’t hid anything from God. Like my poor attempt to hide from my dad, God really does know where we are and what we are doing.

In the long run, my unflappable honesty kept me sane…keeps me sane. I’ve tried to lie before and it starts manifesting in my body. My eye will start twitching or the person I’m lying to, I can’t look them in the eye. It’s mentally sound to keep your conscience clear. I’m reading a book by James Attucher called, “Choose Yourself.” He’s not a Christian, but he talks about tips for living better and he comes to the conclusion that being honest is best for our well being. If a non Christian comes to that conclusion, I think we as Christians really need to make sure we lie as seldom as possible. You may look at the bus situation that I faced as punishment, but it wasn’t really. I was going to clean the buses one way or another. I got paid for it and my conscience was clear.

Jesus Christ is our Valentine

February 15, 2016 By Wendy Leave a Comment

rose

Today is Valentine’s Day. A day for the flower and card sellers, and chocolate makers to make a killing. A few years ago my son asked the question, “So where did all this hearty and chocolately stuff come from on Valentine’s Day?” Good Question. Valentine’s Day is supposed to celebrate love. I celebrate Valentine’s Day. I have had the same Valentine for 28 years now.

The greatest Valentine was the One given, some 2000 years ago. Jesus Christ gave up His life for all mankind that we might have life and life more abundantly.

“The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they might have life, and have it abundantly,” John 10:10

Jesus Christ didn’t give us flowers and “hearty” chocolates. He gave us His life. He gave up everything in order to sacrifice Himself for our sins. He left the majesty of heaven. He emptied Himself. He came to earth as a helpless baby, to grow up in this world, for the sole purpose of dying on a crude, wooden cross, nails hammered into His hands and feet. He gave up His dignity. He was God Himself, hanging on that cross. He was alone, naked, dying an agonizing death. He was thirsty and they gave Him vinegar to drink. Jesus Christ gave Himself because He loved us.

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him will not perish, but have everlasting life,” John 3:16.

Jesus Christ is our greatest Valentine. If you find yourself alone on Valentine’s day, just remember Jesus Christ loves you. He loves you so much that He gave up His life that you might have life and have it abundantly.

Here’s a favorite article about our ultimate Valentine.
